🇦🇺 Merimbula's Australia Day Big Float is Back

Merimbula’s Australia Day Big Float Is Back

Australia Day in Merimbula wouldn’t be complete without one of the coast’s most iconic summer traditions, the Merimbula Big Float.

As the summer holidays wrap up, locals and visitors alike hit the water to drift down the lake with friends, family and fellow float legends. Whether you’re floating on a giant inflatable, paddling a SUP, cruising in a kayak, balancing on a surfboard or just hanging on to a trusty pool noodle, this is all about fun, sunshine and soaking up the best of Merimbula.

When’s the Best Time to Float?

Traditionally, the Big Float starts from the Market Street Bridge around 1.5–2 hours after high tide, but with neap tides this year, there’s plenty of flexibility. Pick the time that suits your day best:

🌅 Early Birds – Sunrise Float

High tide is around 4am, making 6am an ideal time for keen floaters to launch from the Market Street Bridge. Enjoy a peaceful sunrise float and glassy morning conditions — it’s a special way to start Australia Day.

🌞 Midday Cool-Off – Reverse Float

Low tide hits around 10:15am, which opens up a fun alternative. Jump in at Mitchies Jetty or Spencer Park around 12pm, float upstream, pass under the bridge and hop out at the Fisheries Ramp. Perfect for cooling off before lunch.

🌇 Afternoon Float – Wind Down the Day

The next high tide is around 4pm, making 5:30pm onwards ideal for a relaxed float on the outgoing tide. A great way to finish a full day of sun, swimming and celebrations.

👉 Choose your time, grab your float, and enjoy the ride.
